Athens.

The islands within Greece will always feel like home to me, but as a creator and a traveller, I will always be open to all areas in various countries. Athens is a bustling city that I have now been to twice, both of which were short trips but full of culture. If larger cities make you feel something, Athens is worth considering. My trips to Athens have been anywhere from twenty four, to forty eight hours - so here are a few of my recommendations if you ever find yourself in this city which blends modern culture, and ancient history.

The Neighbourhood of Plaka.

Where to Wander.

We here it all the time, but it’s true. The best thing to do while travelling, is to get lost. Get lost in villages, side streets, cities.. Once arriving in Athens, the best thing you can do is to just walk around. Explore all the various neighbourhoods the city has to offer - one offer different than the other, depending on what you are looking for.

Plaka is one of my favourite areas in Athens. It is one of the oldest districts, and definitely not lacking character or charm. It is directly beneath the Acropolis, so you may find some fantastic viewpoints while discovering these cobblestone streets. Surrounded by colourful buildings, traditional restaurants (tavernas), and a large opportunity for shopping.

Other neighbourhoods worth mentioning are Monastiraki and Psiri. Psiri is quite trendy, loaded with street art, cafes, live music venues, and nightlife options. Save Monastiraki for later in your day, as this is where you will want to go for your sunset experience. It is the go to place for a rooftop bar or restaurant, guaranteed to view the Acropolis during sun down. Hyper Astro Bar was our choice for the evening, and it did not disappoint. A great menu, delicious cocktails, and a vibrant DJ. Our sunset experience in Athens was a 10 out of 10 because of Hyper Astro.

Street performers and shopping are also present in this neighbourhood. Athen’s famous flea market is also located in Monastiraki - a perfect place to wander, shop, and try samples of traditional Greek delicacies.

Where to Stay.

Both times in Athens, I have stayed in Airbnb’s that are in the same area of Kolonaki. I find this area to be central to everything, and still convenient to and from the airport despite the large population and traffic within Athens. Everything you may need is within walking distance; coffee, groceries, restaurants, night life, etc. It is also easily walkable to tourist attractions and other neighbourhoods, unless the heat is too much; then it is still central enough that taxis and Ubers are quick to obtain. For a larger group, this Airbnb was perfect in regards to size. The expansive balcony was also a great addition for evening drinks, and morning sunrises when the jet lag has you up earlier than you anticipated!

Another Airbnb in the same area, perfect for solo travellers or couples, would be ARIS. If you would prefer to be a little more outside the city, closer to beaches and the airport, there are two Airbnb’s that I had great experiences with. King George was great for our very last day of the entire trip, prior to flying back to Toronto. Quiet, cozy, and located in a quaint little area. Emvi Apartments III was also a great option when our main criteria was being a short distance to the airport - this one is closer to beaches, and in a more lively area with better options for restaurants. Both were fantastic for our last day after weeks of island hopping - spacious, comfortable, and relaxing.

Things To Do.

It’s no secret then when in Athens, you must visit the Acropolis, Odeon of Herodes Atticus, and Parthenon. Tickets are easily available to purchase online, with the option of a single ticket or guided tour tickets. My biggest advice when it comes to visiting these break taking sites is.. go early! Aim to arrive before they open, with your tickets ready to go. Entry is seamless, and you are guaranteed to beat the crowds and the heat. Both times here, I have finished at around nine in the morning, and the difference between the crowds was already noticeable.

Once finished, head over to the Acropolis Museum - plenty to see, plenty of AC, and a great rooftop cafe. The museum is located in a fantastic area surrounded by plenty of options for lunch, an afternoon drink, and loads of shops.

Another great highlight during one of my stays in Athens was a cooking class and rooftop dinner. Unbeatable views, and an amazing teacher. Booked directly with Airbnb, and located in The Artist Cafe. Over four hours, you will learn how to make a traditional five course Greek meal - with recipes for each dish available for you to take home to recreate in your own kitchen. Once completed, you will enjoy your hard work and prepared food on the private rooftop with skyline views. Book here.

Where to Eat.

In a city the size of Athens, finding a restaurant will never be an issue. There is something for everyone, for every mood, and every type of celebration and/or event. I wanted to expierence an authentic taverna, with live music. Tavern Klimataria came highly recommended, and there were no regrets. Right away you knew you were about to expierence a great meal as you walked in, due to the ambiance and atmosphere - you felt like you were walking into someone’s home. The music was a great addition, and with the long lines and reservation times, you always know this is a good sign.
